Riding in Cars Risky; Motorcycles about 3,000% more so!

The following quote comes from Jim Hedlund, a traffic safety researcher who compiled and analyzed data for the Governors Highway Safety Association.

“For every mile traveled, you have a 30 times (3,000%) higher risk of getting killed on a motorcycle than riding in a car.”

Now think about that for a second. And yes, there are things a motorcyclist can do to make their rides safer. For instance, Motorcyclists can:

1.  Wear the most protective riding gear and helmet money can buy.

2.  Learn to drive defensively; that is learn how to avoid crashes with cars, trucks, fixed objects and others.

3.  Put pressure on Highway Safety Officials to Make everyone else drive defensively too.

Oh, yea one other suggestion:

4.  Don’t ride a motorcycle on our dangerous roads till the roads are safe, not just little safer.  #3 above maybe the most important recommendation. The fact is riding in a car is super dangerous on today’s crazy roads mainly because we don’t enforce safe driving rules. Riding a motorcycle even if you do #1 and #2 above perfectly, is still suicidal because of the other driver.

In fact, I’ll say it even stronger. We’ve lost almost 500% more people on American highways than on the battle fields of all wars we’ve fought since our founding. Motorcycle riding is one of the riskiest of all behaviors known to mankind.

If you don’t know how to drive defensively or how to avoid traffic crashes; take the time to read our book, Highway Safety’s Best Kept Secret . In it you’ll learn not only the specifics of how to avoid traffic accidents; you’ll read how one community of over a 100,000 drivers has all but eliminated traffic crashes altogether. It’s a remarkable story.
